The Dam Birds are a community, like any community, with a geographical home, a citizenry, a culture, a daily routine, and a system of complex relationships. These beautiful birds have chosen to make their home beneath the ugly structure of a flood-control dam, where their elegant grace is juxtaposed with rough and cracked concrete, rusted metal chutes and grates, and water of varying strengths and proportions. Among the citizenry there are birds of different colors and sizes, leaders and followers, strong and weak, handsome and homely, gregarious and timid. It has been my privilege to learn their culture, and capture it in a variety of ways both documentary and artistic. These are the birds of 2016.
